Comment on Thoughts 1/26 (Prompt 2) by Joe

Awesome. I get the feeling your Alliance is my football team. I miss them so much, but I don’t think, “I would go do freshman summer again,” because I’m excited enough about seeing them once a year and all reuniting and seeing our grandkids play chess/football together and shoot the shit.

I used to feel like, “god take me back!!! I’m gonna hate never seeing them!””

Curious to hear your thoughts on Alliance. (maybe like “a love letter to my future relationship with Alliance ” as a jumping off point – but I just want your story, however you choose to present it!)

Did not intend to word vom:

I used to think STS was cheesy and good in theory. I am so happy I think of everything (good and ESPECIALLY BAD) as playing a role in my learning. My ME 101 is someone else’s Greek History. My banging on drums is someone else’s shooting guns.

What are your general thoughts on STS? Really about it? If so, did they “sell” it “hard” enough?

When I see your arrows going back and forth, I can’t help but think of my “unwillingness to give back.”

It’s a poisonous thought I’ve always held onto, and it was no one’s fault and didn’t hurt anyone outside of me, but I’m glad I see the absurdity in it now.

Essentially, I would reason, “Joe, [this] is funny, and worth sharing. BUT! You don’t want people feeling “forced upon, unsolicited spam, no consent – MINDRAPE”. Rather than,

“This is dope, I want to share, take it or leave it!”
fine with, “Fuck you joe. I didn’t ask for this.”

pumped with, “Huh…that’s weird…Joe’s a schitzo…wait…everything he posts is something that intended to make me laugh…and maybe he just genuinelly laughs at all comedians…well, I think it is pretty funny when Craig Robinson plays keys and sings, ‘if your happy and you know it’…ok…he’s alright :) I will take 1% and be inspired! He is simply casting a large net!”

weird format I’m playing with- fun fact- I got 8% on my CS 106a final, and “didn’t understand a thing after Karel”
subconciously gave up

Bye,

Joe

Life Goals in Development

I would enjoy messing around; definitely something very “feel” – a trait that is sadly not realized yet through the computer (how do we make the “electric drum set” version of this?)

Most entertaining way to dance to this bpm type of electronic music – gotta learn! Decided to iPhone Slo-Mo video and just do it piece by piece moving like a sloth.

Awesome to see someone dedicated to the “science” of the craft (sharp precise rhythm) while just letting herself “flow” (I expect her to be speaking a real language, but I have no idea…

but does it even matter to my understanding if it’s a real language?)

excuse the Gandhi-ness lol just flowing here on a lovely morning

Sensing a bit of a percussive theme in my interests /*regarding the expulsion of excess energy – what football used to be for me */

Snapchat

Hello all!

For my social media related post of the week, I’d love to bring up Snapchat!

Surface Level:

-I love that I can catch up with my buddies in NE, Minnesota, South Carolina, Tennessee, etc.

Those are the football players that came to mind, but I’ll not name at least 20 more states

/*as a 5th year who’s majority of friends, speaking purely total volume, left Stanford this past June in search of their Corona beach!*/

Deep Analysis (prepare for some soapbox):
-Watching the stories is super sweet for learning about culture. Australia Day snaps let me see everyday people doing everyday things
(e.g. partying, watching fireworks, playing curling

/*lol that probably similar to saying, “when does that match start?” for a football game*/)

with their friends. I believe Snapchat is a less intimidating interface

(based on me: I’m more likely to send a silly snap, than to record a video on my phone and upload it to YouTube, which is easier than writing a book, and so on) that encourages those who might not usually share (any number of reasons)

to go ahead and “take the leap.”

Feel free to follow me; username is:

joehemi

And also feel free to delete me immediately!

For so long, I viewed it as users who post a lot saying: “I believe that I am so universally funny, that everybody is dying to see that I’m petting a cat right now.” Now, I’m more likely to say, “woah, these dudes curling and drinking Fosters in Australia, is just the same as guys playing wiffleball and drinking Coors.

Ozie Ozie Ozie!

Comment on The Machine Stops – The Dark Side of Roots and Visions by Joe

Definitely an eye-opening reading! The question you pose (“what gives us our humanity”) makes me think 100 different things after reading “The Machine Stops”. A couple things stood out to me from the story:

During her first conversation with Kuno on her “round plate” (holy shit, the first iPad!!), she can’t be sure if he was sad, as “the Machine did not transmit nuances of expression”. I immediately thought of the conversation we had in class about how difficult it is to determine mood over text messages (the ominous, “I’m fine.” or our ever growing use of emojis), and even FaceTime has limitations (regarding how high quality the video streams, not able to see body language, etc.).

I believe this idea of “good enough” will continue to rise in our society, even though innovators may seek to improve on it (sort of paradoxical). In terms of responsibilities, of a society, I think it’s important to reaffirm the power of face to face communication whenever possible. No doubt, technology like FaceTime has been incredibly helpful for people separated by geographic distance (e.g. the ability for someone in the U.S. to “see” family in Europe), but harmful when abused (e.g. a long email conversation addressing an issue that coworkers could simply get together in a room and discuss more effectively in person).

Another passage that hit hard (spoiler alert!) was as Kuno described his voyage to the surface:

“It was naked, humanity seemed naked, and all these tubes and buttons and machineries neither came into the world with us, nor will they follow us out, nor do they matter supremely while we are here.”

I can’t help but think of the generation who doesn’t know a world without Facebook, Instagram, snaps, likes, and favorites. I recall a classmate describing a younger cousin she had, and how seriously she took the number of favorites (or lack therof) she received on Instagram posts. Now obviously, most people should be able to keep it in perspective, but my point is all the technology around us, while designed to make life easier, can make what’s important a tougher decision.

All for now. Looking forward to class discussion of this!

Comment on tbt: comparing and contrasting the motivations of early internet users to social media users of today by Joe

What strikes me hard as well is the idea of keeping in touch with people from the past. Although a select few were active on virtual communities, it’s crazy to think how difficult it was to keep in touch. Of course people sent letters back and forth, but it wasn’t nearly as easy as a quick fb message or text. That being said, I wonder how people value past relationships now, even though they’re so easily accessible. Not to get all STS (lol), but I wonder how behavior has changed now that it’s so easy to get back in touch with people from the past (possibly caring less because it doesn’t take as much of an time/energy investment).

Comment on week one: expectations, knowledge, and the role of social media by Joe

Hey Luke, first of all, super dope layout/picture.

Always cool to see what people are using, especially in your case as a musician. Would like to ask two questions:

1. What are your top 5 subreddits to stay up to date with? I’ve browsed pretty heavy (ok, sometimes hours) just around the entire site, and every time I find something cool and pertinent to my interests, I just think of what else could be out there!

2. How often do you encounter negativity on soundcloud (or any sharing media) in regards to your music? I like to nerd out about Logic and watch a bunch of interviews/radio show appearances and he’s said before that he’s just stopped looking at comments all together. Not word for word, but something like, “I’ve put my heart into this, I’ve worked so hard for this, just to have some 12 year old out there from his couch say, ‘fuck this, this is gay, this dude can’t rap’.” Obviously, as any kind of artist, you learn to ignore the bullshit, but I’m wondering how much of the feedback you get is actually constructive/useful.

Also am happy to discuss all things Logic related whenever. haha
